There seems to be a new epidemic thats not Pig related. I call it rolling eyes syndrome and it seems to occur mostly when I talk to people about what I do. As soon as you mention IT, the eyes roll and basically the conversation comes to an end. Honestly it happened to me the other day and you would have thought that I had turned into a serial killer.
This epidemic has got me thinking as to the reason why:
- Most small businesses are plainly not interested in anything to do with IT, its an additional cost that quite frankly they could do without
- They have been ripped off or had such bad service that the mere thought of another IT company just scares them to death
- Or simply people are just plain rude – Financial advisers etc do not have a huge interest to me but I am not rude enough to roll my eyes and cut you off mid conversation.
Yes its true the IT industry has not exactly got the most glowing of reputations but it participates in a list of many others. Oh and lets face it, we are not all the same some of us are a little different .
I have come up with a few ideas to prevent the eye rolling:
- When said infected IT bloke or girl gives you a card, take a moment to read it. The chances are that it will have a clue as to what they do! At least then you know what you are letting yourself in for
- If you are not interested just say so. There is really no need to gesticulate, pull faces etc etc
- Maybe just open your mind and have a chat – after all it may just be useful to you.
So there we go, my first blog rant. Hopefully by following those ideas above we can have some sensible conversations.
Anybody else noticed the epidemic?
