Simon’s Book review – Get off Your Arse

  • 3 Comments... Have your say!

Back last week I posted “The Get of Your Arse Edition” about a new book that has been written by Brad Burton, MD of 4Networking purposefully titled “Get of your Arse”.  I stumped up £12 for a copy and have just finished reading it.

In the run up to me buying the book, there was quite a buzz being generated in and around the 4N network about the book and it was being well received.  Could it be this good?.

Anyway before I proceed with the review I am going to come clean and state that I actually found the book to be a thoroughly decent read and in actual fact is one of the few business books that has actually had me laughing, so yeah it is good!

The Plot

Get off your arse, from now on referred to as GOYA (cos I am to lazy to keep typing the title) is an account by Brad on how he went from corporate life to self employed to MD of the UK’s largest business network.  Now, this is not some shameless self promotion type of life/business story that seem to litter the shelves of bookstores across the land.  No, far from it, GOYA is raw as only Brad can be.  It covers the low points and of course the high points but never in a way that makes you feel inadequate and in many cases it leaves you feeling inspired and ironically actually wanting to GOYA.  Brad covers the pressure that running a small business brings in a succinct and understandable way, without filling your head with bullshit phrases.  But without doubt the biggest thing to take away from the book is that you can relate to it, if you run a small business and read this book the chances are  most of the things covered in it you will have experienced or are going to experience  and that for me gives you a feeling that actually, the damn business gods are not picking on you solely.  They are picking on all of us and that is comforting.

It was interesting to note how the 4Networking business model came about and how previous experiences had shaped the network and just goes to show that the old cliche “turn a negative into a positive” is not such a stupid phrase after all.

The rawness adds to the appeal of the book and some of the quotes border on hilarious, no mean feat for a business focused book.

All in all the book is well presented and written well and I personally think that Brad should be proud of his achievment (and no he has not paid me to say that – although he can if he wants!)

Worth a Read?

Yes, this book is well worth a read and both novice and seasoned business owners will find something to take away from it.  So go buy it from here
